JUSTICE OF THE PEACE
The Hardwick Town Clerk’s Office is reaching out to the community with an opportunity to become involved with your Town Government.
By Vermont State Statute the population of the Town of Hardwick allows us to have 10 Justices of the Peace to represent our Town. Since the General Election of November 2020 we have only had 5 elected JP’s. Moving forward to the November 2022 General Election we are hoping for a full slate of JP’s to work on our team.
We are hoping that community members might want to join us with the very important role a local Justice of the Peace has.
Justices of the Peace can, if they wish to, perform marriages, but it is not required that they do so. They are also a representative to your local Board of Civil Authority and assist the Town Clerk’s Office with Elections, tax abatement hearings and grand list value appeal hearings.
Progressive’s, Democrat’s and Republican’s wishing to become a Justice of the Peace should contact your local party chair or the office of your State Party Leader.
Independent candidates who are interested in becoming a Justice of the Peace for Hardwick must be a registered Hardwick voter; you must collect 23 signatures of other registered Hardwick voters and sign a Consent of Candidate form. These items must be returned to the Hardwick Town Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, August 12, 2022.
Petition and Consent of Candidate forms can be picked up at the Hardwick Town Clerk’s Office or can be mailed or emailed to you if you contact us at 802-472-5971.
We are very hopeful that we will have interest from many of you to help keep Hardwick moving forward.
