Tax and Water & Sewer Payment Update


On Thursday, April 2, 2020 the Hardwick Select Board discussed the effect that COVID-19 is having on the Hardwick community and how we can assist. Some of our residents have expressed concerns regarding the upcoming due dates for both property taxes and for those who are on our water & sewer system.

For property taxes the due date of May 10, 2020 will remain in effect. This due date was voted on at a previous Town Meeting and the town is not in position to hold another vote to adjust the previously set deadline. Due to statutory guidelines we are unable to postpone the tax due date.

If you are a Hardwick tax payer who has been affected by the COVID -19 pandemic we encourage you to reach out to our office after May 1, 2020 to discuss your options for payment. If you are able to pay a portion of the balance and need to set up a contract for the balance you can reach out to Amanda Fecteau in the Town Managers Office at amanda.fecteau@hardwickvt.gov
If repayment is not an option, the final step is to request an abatement of your taxes from the Board of Civil Authority. This board consists of the Select Board, Justice of the Peace, Town Clerk, Town Treasurer and Listers. Requests are heard at a hearing and the board renders a decision based on criteria for abatement set up by the State of Vermont.

The Select Board also discussed the billing for the Water & Sewer system. At this time the Town of Hardwick is following the States directions regarding disconnection of utilities. No one will be disconnected for non-payment until the order is lifted.  However, the Water & Sewer system must continue to move forward with operations. Therefore, the quarterly meter reading was done on April 1, 2020 and the billing will be processed and mailed with a due date of May 15, 2020.

Unlike Property Taxes there is not an abatement process for utility billing. But we will be offering
payment plans to customers in need. So as we draw closer to May 15, 2020 please reach out to
alberta.miller@hardwickvt.gov or tonia.gray@hardwickvt.gov to discuss payment options.

Finally, we were able to move the due date for Dog Licensing from April 1, to May 1, 2020. We do
encourage everyone who can to please renew by mail or our drop box. Spayed/neutered dogs are $8.00 and non-spayed/neutered are $12.00. Send us a check or money order along with a current rabies certificate and we will mail your license and tags to you. Please include your phone number so if we have any issues, we can contact you.
